Purley Downs Golf Club

Information

Purley Downs, a 6281-yard, par 70 (White Tee), - 5564 yard 71 (Red Tee), downland layout, designed by JH Taylor in 1904, is superbly situated some 500 feet above sea level with magnificent views over the whole of London. From the highest vantage points you can see Wembley Arch, Canary Wharf, Hampstead Heath and the City of London landmarks; some even claim to have seen Windsor Castle on a clear day. The 100-year-old clubhouse looks the other way (south). From the picture windows or the terrace, the eye is led to the 1st green (a par three), the club's signature hole and up to a symphony of wooded slopes. Our 1st Hole has recently been described in Golf Word Magazine's Travel Section (March 2009) as "perhaps the best opening par-3 in golf" The fine links-type turf with chalk subsoil allows play 52 weeks of the year and the course layout, with its diverse downland terrain, provides an interesting challenge for both high-and low-handicap golfers.
